Abstract – Pelvic peritonitis caused by Actinomyces
The authors present a clinical case of pelvic peritonitis caused by Actinomyces to a patient with intrauterine device (Cooper T380). The device had been used for over 7 years, and the simptomatology occurred after the device extraction. The patient was treated by surgery followed by antibiotic therapy, and the evolution was favorable.Information about Actinomyces genital infection, diagnosis, evolution, treatment and the frequent association with IUD is reviewed. All the cases need histological confirmation. The authors sugest that the association between IUD and Actinomyces, although rare, must be considered when an pelvic inflammatory process occurs to a IUD user.
